North Brooklyn Mutual Aid (NBkMA) is an entirely volunteer-run collective of neighbors helping neighbors in Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Our goal is to care for our neighbors in pursuit of addressing intersecting economic, racial, social, and environmental injustices. We prioritize accountability for all of our neighbors in solidarity, not charity. How We StartedNorth Brooklyn Mutual Aid (NBkMA) formed in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our efforts began when a group of neighbors came together to support one another with access to food and medical supplies. A group of neighbors established NBkMA and partnered with local food pantries, soup kitchens, housing complexes, cooperatives, senior centers, hospitals, and grown into a network of community-led initiatives that is continuously evolving to meet community needs. Who We Are We’re an entirely volunteer-run collective of neighbors committed to the North Brooklyn community and working to create a more equitable neighborhood. We are not a government agency or nonprofit, and we do not endorse political candidates. Our funds are donation-based and tax-deductible via Hack Club Bank, where you can view that way that funds are spent, all of which go directly back into the community.What We Do NBkMA partners with the community to:maintain an online network where thousands of neighbors can find volunteer opportunities, information about local events and campaigns, and moredistribute PPE essential goods, including care kits, winter warmth kits, and period kitsincrease access to free food, grow our own, and care for community spaces, including a network of community fridges and the McCarren Park Demonstration Gardenorganize community events such as book giveaways, seasonal collection drives, and workshops/trainingsreduce pressures on waste streams through food rescue and compost collectionsteward parks and open spaces, and act as an NBK Open Streets Coalition memberbuild shared community capacity by freely sharing knowledge and resources, including an ongoing skillshare workshop series, protect our neighbors through organizing in solidarity with local deportation defense initiatives, engage in conflict mediation, public conversations, outreach, and advocacy that touches on all of these projects Explore our current initiatives!
