North Brooklyn Compost

A community compost project
Volunteers collect food scraps which are picked up and processed by Big Reuse at their Salt Lot community composting site in Gowanus.

Time & Location
Sundays from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at McGolrick Park
Look for our volunteers and big green bins located on the path leading from Russell Street to the center of the park.

We accept:
  • All fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Bread
  • Eggshells
  • Coffee grounds, beans, filters
  • Teabags (with any staples removed)
  • Grains
  • Nuts
  • Compostable serviceware 

We do not accept:
  • Meat or fish
  • Bones
  • Dairy products (cheese, milk, whole eggs)
  • Shells (clam, oyster, mussel)
  • Plastic, rubberbands, or produce stickers 

Volunteer Roles
  • Staff food scrap drop offs on Sundays
  • Plan and staff events (i.e. pumpkin smash)
